Capt. John Peter Hoffman, PA Provincial Forces

My 6th great grandfather was John Peter Hoffman. Born 1709, Germany, died 1797 Dauphin County, Pa. Many sources say he was a Capt. in the Pennsylvania Provincial Forces. I still have not found anything to verify this rumor. Could anyone please help me? I've tried asking the State Archives of Pa for help, but they had nothing. I don't have any dates or his regiment. This leads me to believe that his service is based on a legend.
