Hello, Gerald. Yes, Bob Aaron was a mulatto, and he was born into slavery. Technically, he received his freedom when President Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation. However, I am almost certain that his true freedom date was when the Civil War ended. Bob was the only male in my known lineage who was illiterate, and he worked as a farm hand. By the way, I think mulatto is still an acceptable term, but I have never heard anyone refer to President Obama as a mulatto (although he is one).

Speaking of your native American heritage, my maternal grandmother (1891--1960, born Lucinda Fells) probably was half Native-American and half African-American. She had straight black hair and facial features characteristic of Native-Americans. The odd thing about her was that she had no knowledge of her birthplace, parents, or heritage. I have no proof of this, but I have long suspected that she was part Cherokee or Seminole. If the Native-American connection is correct, then her Native-American forebears probably avoided being marched away in the Trail of Tears. -Lester Aaron, 16 July 2009-
