What is an Abarca or Abarka?

On a recent vacation to Spain, I learned that an Abarca or Abarka in Basque is a hand made peasant shoe. An Abarca has a hand sewn leather base. Two leather straps are attached to the base and are wound up the leg to attach the shoe to the foot. These are very common shoes for Basque peasants.
