Although Sancho Garces Abarca may have been a Basque, the Abarca family is generally considered to have come from Aragon. In 1130, Lope Abarca was given the title of Baron of Gavin. The Abarcas became one of the dominant families of a region of Aragon known as the Alto Gallego. This region is located in the high mountains bordering France.
