My maiden name is Abato and as I understand it my great grandfather and his brother came to this country at the end of the 19th century from Naples. As they entered the country one brother's name was changed to Abato (my great grandfather). He settled in the Pittsburgh area and then in Baltimore. His brother found his way to the Rochester area and his name remained Abate. I don't think it was ever Abbate but I'm not sure! If you've discovered anything else please let me know!
