George T Abbey was not just a gun dealer, but a gun maker, in Utica, New York, and subsequently in Chicago, Illinois. He made muzzle-loading rifles, shotguns, and a few target pistols, as well as early breechloading double shotguns. His better grade guns were of extremely high quality, comparable to a fine English gun of the period. He arrived in Chicago in 1852 and continued to work at the trade there through at least 1874. He was also noted as a maker of full-length telescopic sights for long range target rifles. I have four percussion riflesand one double shotgun made by him. One of the rifles is a side-by-side double-rifle. I also have two of his rifle scopes.
