James J. Ackerman, NJ, b. 1802, s/o John L. & Catherine Romine

I have a dilemma:

The accepted date of death for James* is 30 Nov 1878. This is what appears in Tobey's genealogy (Vol. 2, #6.70) and elsewhere; and wife Rachel (Valentine) is listed in the 1879 Paterson NJ city directory as widow of James. However, James appears in the 1880 federal census, living at the same address in Paterson with Rachel, son Abraham, son William and wife Leah (my ancestors) and one of their children, Sarah. James's age in the census is about 76 - so 2 or 3 years off - but who else could it be?

Can anyone clear this up?
We'd be extremely grateful!

* James J. Ackerman lived in Campgaw and later in the Ramsey (NJ) area, where he died. He married (1) Helen Storms, 1822 (rec. Pompton), and (2) Rachel Valentine, 1835 at Kakiat. According to Tobey, James was bur. in Wyckoff -- anybody know where?
