This what I have concerning John Acree who lived in Sullivan Co., TN. John was from Caroline Co., but the other three Wm., James and Ambrose could have been from King William, Hanover , King & Queen as well as Caroline. I BASE THIS ON THE FACT ONLY A JOHN IS LISTED ON THE TAX rECORDS.

Caroline County, Virginia Revolutionary War Soldiers

The following information was extracted from “General Index to Compiled Service Records of the Revolutionary War Soldiers”,(M860 - Roll # 1)

John Acree Served in Virginia (7th VA Regiment) as a private (R.21). In 1832 he had been a resident of Sullivan Co., TN for 7 years. Reported he had been drafted into service while a resident of Caroline Co., VA. His wife’s Lucy was aged 69 in 1844 and the widow of John. She had married John on 21 Nov 1793 John reported to have died on the 2nd or 6th of March 1838. John Acree, the son of Abraham Acree and his wife, Ann was born 2 March 1760. Lucy was the daughter of John & Salley Schools, She was born on 30 June 1774. John & Lucy were married in Caroline or King & Queen Co., VA Children reported as:

1. Elizabeth Acree b. 21st Feb. 1795

2. Matthew Y. Acree b. 21st of Jun or July 1796

3. Salley Acree b. 21st July 1798

4. Uriah Acree b. 2nd Dec. 1800

5. Susanna Acree b. 19th Apr 1803

6. Fanney Acree b. 7th Feb. 1806

7. Polley Acree b . 4th Aug. 1808.

8. John Acree b. 13th Dec. 1810

9. Lucy Acree b. 5th Dec. 1812

10. William Acree b. 7th Jun 1815

John Acree appears on a list of “Names of Men re-inlisted in the 7th VA Regiment” for 3 years on the reverse side of an account: states as follows:

The United with Capt. Thos. Posey in acct Dr. to reinlisting 22 men- 3 years @ 20….440

to allowance for re-inlisting 1 and 1/3 each 29 1/3

to balance returned paymaster 50 1/3


James Acree enlisted in Caroline Co., VA. He served from October 1776 to October 1781 as a private in Capt. Thomas Hords Company in Col. Geo V. Stubblefield’s Virginia Regiment. He was a resident of Knox Co., TN October 6th 1824, aged 70, (therefore b. ca. 1754). He was married to Ester Jones on Jan 1, 1825 in Meigs Co., TN (note: probably as a 2nd or 3rd wife) As widow to James, Esther Acree, filed for a pension, when age 60 in 1853 (therefore b. ca. 1793) Esther died on Sept. 5, 1884 while living in Roane Co., TN

William Acre/Acrey of the 7th VA Regiment (Note: Same outfit as John Acree of Caroline Co., VA) served in various Companies commanded by Col. Alexander McClenachan. Wm appears on rolls covering the period from May 1777 to Feb. 1778. His term of service expired on Feb 8th 1778. Wm was of Capt. Henry Young’s Co in 1777 as well as Capt. Reuben Lipscomb’s Co. in 1777. Reported in Hospital Nov 1777 through Jan. 8th 1778. Wm. Received 15-13-0 on July 4th 1783 according to “A list of Soldiers of the VA Line on Continental Establishment”, who have received certification for balance of pay.(Note: It is a good bet he was from Caroline County)

Ambrose Acre/Acrey of the 7th VA Regiment (Note: ) Same outfit as John, James, & William. Ambrose was a drummer by May 22nd, 1777, was of Capt. Henry Young’s Co. commanded by Alexander McClenachan. For the period Aug 1777 to Sept. 1777.he was on a muster roll of Capt. Reuben Lipscomb’s Co. commanded by Col. Alexander McClenachan Ambrose was sick in Hospital Oct. 1777 thru Nov 1777. He was on furrow(sic) Nov 1777 through Dec. 22, 1777. He re-enlisted for 3 years as a drummer on Dec. 11th 1777.. Appears on a list of men that re-enlisted in March 1778. Became a Private on May 1st, 1778. Appeared on a roll dated Camp Paramus (NJ?) June 1778 through July 13, 1778. Was of Lt. Col. Heth’s 3rd VA Regiment on July 4th, 1778> Was at White Plains (NY) on Sept. 1st, 1778. On a roll dated Sept. 1778 through Oct 1778 at Newark(NJ)as sick at FishKill(NY). His name appears in a book: “A list of Soldiers of the VA Line on Continental Establishment”, who have received certification for the Balance of their pay. Received 31-11-5 on October 22nd, 1784 (Note: it’s a good bet he was of Caroline Co.)


This sould convince you that John Acree of Sullivan Co., TN was son of Abraham and Ann Acree of Caroline Co., VA. I have limited information about VA Acree Families. They were here before the 1704 Rent Rolls.
