I've heard the Cherokee rumor also but never been able to verify. The Acrees came to Virginia around 1750.As these families grew, a large group moved to Bertie Co, NC.That group multiplied and some came to Georgia around 1850.The area discussed lies in several Georgia counties which have changed boundaries since 1850.Counties:Habersham, Stephens, Banks.I have several relatives that moved West around the turn of the 20th century. It is possilbe this line crosses with yours."Jack" Acree appears in several generations.Other male names used were William, James, Allen, James-Clayton, and John-Knox.
Good luck and let me know if you can trace Jack and yourself back a few generations.
