I believe the James M. Adsit you are referring to is the son of Leonard and Frances (Davenport) Adsit. Leonard died 10 Sep 1816.
DEATH: East Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, Co., NY
In memory of - Adsit, Leonard - Sept. 10, 1816 - age 33 yr.
(Adsit), Charles D., son of Leonard and Fanny - Aug 9, 1816 - age 1 yr. 8 mo. Note: From "Sherburne Centennial" - "Orlando Davis married Mrs. Davenport Adsit, removed to Milo, N.Y. and died there."
I believe the children of Leonard and Frances were raised by Loenard's father after Leonard's death.
