Hello Glynis
My g-grandmother was called Elizabeth Scaife (nee Agar) and on the 1881 census her father Ralph Agar lived with them.He was 76 on the census and resided in Stillington, York.He is my g-g grandfather. He was born at Grimston, York.He was an agricultural labourer. The 1881 census shows he was a widow.I still need to find out who my g-g grandfather was married to but at the moment I am stuck because there are two Ralph Agars registered in the area with christenings 3 years apart (neither having bearing on the 1881 census which sugggests that my g-g grandfather was born in 1805).
I still have a lot of research to do in this area but I need to verify that my g-g grandfather was the son of Uriah who in turn was the son of the Ralph Agar that you are referring to.When and if I make the link I will contact you again. It seems that the Stillington Parish records have not appeared on the IGI website yet so it involves more footwork than I was anticipating.
Best wishes in your search.
