Dear Millie Metzler Roberts,

Greetings.  I am so excited to see your letter posted on April 6.  I believe we are second cousins.  Helena Ahlers (Hess) Matthiessen was my great aunt.  My mother, Frances Ahlers Devore, was the daughter of Mamie Piffero and Fredrick William Ahlers born in Austin Nevada.  Fred and Helena were brothers and sisters. Helena went to live with the Hesses after her father Frederick Ahlers died at age 55 or so, and Lizzie Irmina Hunt Ahlers had the children taken away from her because of alcoholism.  I have the family court papers in my files.  Elizabeth Irmina Hunt's parents were the famous Captain William Hunt and Elizabeth Hunt.  The Hess family were also from the same area in Germany, and in the old country lived in close proximity too.  They may have travelled to settle in the Reese River Valley together.  Captain William Hunt was also into the "Gold Rush" and I did find some mining claims in his name in Nevada.  They are buried in Austin near the rest of the Ahlers family.  Helena's brother Fred was buried in Eureka NV with his wife and 2 sons.

I spoke with Helena when she was 94 years old, or so she said.  My mother knew her well, and used to visit her in California. She told me about her family, but I don't know if I wrote it down.  She was quite a character.  We laughed, she told me she died her hair red and went dancing every Friday night.

I would love to exchange information with you.  I have copies of original birthcertificates from the Archives in Carson City, newspaper clippings etc.

I am sorry to hear your father has passed away.  They leave a big vaccum.  I really miss my dear sweet mother.  Please tell me how much to send you for copying costs and I will send you money or how ever you wish to do it.

I also am in contact via internet with a distant cousin in Dusseldorf Germany.  Have been to the homeland and seen and have pictures of some of the area.

I will look forward to hearing from you soon.  My daughter lives in Portland area.  I am in Florida now, but will be visiting in Oregon this summer.
