John Armstrong - Arctic Whaler (born 1849 in NY state)

I'm looking for info on a John Armstrong (b 1849 in NY to Andrew Armstrong & Ann Eliza Kelley).
John was listed as one of 12 sons and 1 daughter, in Andrew Armstrong's obit in Kansas Oct.17, 1908.
John was noted as being 'of Alaska'.

It is believed that he (John) may have been an Artic Whaler.

Does anyone have any way of looking up information on Whaling ships that were from/or came to Alaska?
He may have shipped out of Seattle or San Francisco but lived in Alaska.

Which are the ports where the whaling ships would have docked?
