Hitting a wall, Census indexes, land records... any suggestions

I'm looking for information on my great-great grandfather Robert Carlson who owned a city block in Anchorage in the 1920s. I have his 1920 census information, but little else. His obituary, which I have from my great grandmothers clipings did not have a date... argh! I can't order a death certificate without any information on when he died... this cunundrum is driving me crazy.

Robert was seperated from his surviving daughter after the death of his wife and older child in December of 1889. He kept tabs on his daughter, Jessie, as she grew up through former friends and when her grandfather finally passed away Robert reinitiated contact. He sent Jessie money to move her family to Alaska but died only a year or so after she arrived, so very little information is known about him. I'm just looking for someplace to start. Like I said I have him in the 1920 census and am slowly going through the 1910 census. I know in 1889 he was in North Dakota but the 1890 census is non existant... so... anybody have an index for 1900 or 1910? He would have been about 58 in 1910 48 in 1900.

According to his obit he was a member of note in the pioneers but I have been unable to get them to even tell me that they will not give me information.

He owned a city block Anchorage could I find land records? Where would I look?

Any other ideas at all would be wonderful! I'm just looking for a place to get a foot hold and a start.

btw/ where can I get somebody to do an obit look up? Jessie's husband Edwin Haugdahl died in Jan of 75 in anchorage. Are there obit indexes of this decade? Asking somebody to plod through a month of obits is just too much. Thanks
