Have you checked with the Verndale, MN, Historical Society? They are a very active group with over 6,000 family names cataloged and 4 volumes published history of various family names.
I am aware of a Prof. D.C. Rhoades (Rhodes) of Verndale, MN. I know he was a photographer there and have a scan of his mark that was stamped on the back of photos taken in the 1880s. D.C. Rhoades was a photographer on the Brower Survey of Lake Itasca State Park, in MN, done in 1891. His photos were published with the record of the survey. Since Verndale is a very small community, I would suspect that D.C. Rhoades is connected with your Stephan. Perhapse a father or brother?
