Hello Liz Chasolen, dear relative, After three years a follow up! Probably I can help you with information about the brother (Tjeerd Stienstra) of your grandfather (Tjibbe Stienstra). Tjeerd Stienstra was my great-grandfather, my mother is the daughter of Okke Stienstra, one of the son's of Tjeerd end Grietje Kijlstra. Okke was born in the Netherlands (28 April 1896). I have a lot of information about Tjeerd, the only problem is that I have to translate it for you. Very briefly: Tjeerd has been a leader of the labour movement in the northern part of the Netherlands (1885 - 1896). Because of several incidents he run away to start a new life in the US, first in Paterson, later in Fair Hope (Alabama). Indeed, he has been one of the founders of the village. Later he moved to St Louis (Missouri). He passed away on 9th April 1935 and is burried in St. Louis at the Valhallah Chapel of Memories Cemetery. A historical movie (1985) is discribing the most specific incident Tjeerd has been envolved: The Hogerhuis Affair. This affair was the main reason for his move to the US. At least I can send you by now these links: the first is a genealogy-link in the Frisian language, the second is the biography of Tjeerd Stienstra in the Dutch language. http://members.chello.nl/~a.stienstra/stienstra/HZ002443.HTM http://www.iisg.nl/edu/hogerhuis/162.htm If you like me to translate the required information, please let me know, I will help you with all my pleasure. Looking very much forward to hear from you, Best regards, Keimpe Bleeker Oenkerk, The Netherlands Notify Administrator about this message?
