McNeil Family of Barbour County, Al
I am a descendant of CAROLINE MCNEIL and Dr. Robert C. Johnson whe wer married 5 April 1860 in Barbour Co. Caroline was the daughter of DR. JOHN C. MCNEIL(b., 1816, NC; d. 5 Dec 1875, Barbour Co) and MARY A. HAMILTON(B. ca 1824, SC).According to family history, Caroline's grandfather, JOHN MCNEIL, went to Barbour Co. in the early 1820's and settled near the Pea River Church. He died soon thereafter, and descendants along the road from Louisville and Hobdy's Bridge told of John McNeil, the first white man to die in what is now Barbour County, and of the coffin that the Indians were said to have made for his burial.
The children of Dr. John C. McNeil are as follows: Caroline(my ancestor); Samuel H.; Nancy Jane(m. George Macon); Sarah Effie; John C.(Jr.); Mary A; William; Minnie and Irene.
If anyone has knowledge of any of this family, I would appreciate hearing from you.
