The O'Shields O'Sheal DNA project has been very beneficial with many O'Shields or O'Sheal men participating. Those O'Shields who are interested in representing their lines are encouraged to participate.

The DNA tests have been helpful in coordinating traditional research, such as primary documentation, secondary documentation, oral history, and then supporting or denying such with scientific evidence. We have been able to discard faulty records and faulty oral tradition or misinformation, and obtain accurate documentation supported by scientific testing.

For example, the Wiley Oshields line has two testees, each coming from different sons. Wiley Oshields was born ca 1801 in Spartanburg Co, SC, the son of Teresa O'Shields.
Because of DNA testing we know that it was Wiley O'Shields himself who was fathered by a male Wooten and we also have multiple matches with several Wooten testees.

Wileys older brother Samuel Oshields also has DNA lineage and we have excellent results with this. This will be announced in the future. The exact fathers name has been discovered.

Not long ago I received notification of a private test result (not part of our regular study) done for a lineage descending from Daniel Oshields born 1785, wife Rhoda. I was told that the lineage does not match the male line Oshields DNA. Daniel born 1785 is not the son of Jethro O'Shields, John O'Shields, Jefferson O'Shields, etc. I have requested DNA test results for confirmation of this.
Extensive research with public and private records have already proven that Daniel born 1785 is not the son of Jethro or John Oshields, but the DNA may help further in confirming that Daniel born 1785 is the son of Teresa "Tracy" Oshields, as is widely thought.

We also have mitochondrial DNA testing done on female lines. This part of the study is not shown as a part of the YDNA study because it is female lines (mitochondrial not Y DNA).

By utilizing the DNA test as a genealogical tool, we can weigh the DNA against the sources collected, such as primary records and judge them.

For example, documentation states that Elizabeth Osheal alias Wooten, wife of Tyrie Harrison had two brothers named Wiley and Samuel Oshields who went to Lumpkin County, GA (part later became Dawson County, GA)during the gold rush.

Since we knew that Elizabeth O'Shields alias Wooten Harrison was not the daughter of Jethro O'Shields as had been reported in error for some recent years, we wondered if DNA testing (both YDNA and mitochondrial) could be useful. It was! Elizabeth's family had stated that she was known as Elizabeth Osheal alias Wooten. A great granddaughter stated that maybe Wooten was her step-father, since she was known as Wooten. It was interesting to know that Wiley was her brother (through primary sources) and then even more interesting to know that Wiley was fathered by a Wooten in 1801. So when Elizabeth was about 9 years old, her mother Teresa Oshields had Wiley by a Wooten. The DNA test substantiated the family tradition.

Research conclusion: Through extensive research we have been able to re-construct the family of Teresa Oshields and verify her children included Elizabeth Oshields alias Wooten, wife of Tyree Harrison, Wiley Oshields, and Samuel Oshields. This has been exciting for descendants of these lines knowing that DNA has brought confirmation and now there is a definite desire to work on the new lineages to trace for all these three lines...Elizabeth Osheal alias Wooten Harrison, Samuel Harrison born 1799, and Wiley Oshields born 1801.

I have spoken of this case study at several genealogical classes I have taught and it has encouraged other researchers from different lineages and families other than ours, to become interested in DNA as a useful genealogical tool. Thank you O'Shields men for being proud of your family---your participation in the DNA study has benefitted others and inspired them to confirm their family lineages.

The DNA tests for Oshields have been useful also to verify that we do have ancient Irish origins; also as more and more O'Shields men become interested in their lineages they are stepping up to represent their lines, and we can see the beginning of differentiation between the various Oshields lineages who are father-son Oshields through the whole lineage. (ie not born of female Oshields for any generation).

I must stress that the DNA test alone does not tell one persons name such as "John Doe", but it is the study and comparion of tests as a group, and with a large database that has been beneficial. We have been extremely diligent to obtain and examine traditional documentation for each generation, each link, all the way back to earliest known ancestor. The combination of this standard of documentation, multiple testees, and input with leading scientists and DNA experts to our study, have progressed our study greatly.

I want to publicly thank David for bringing to light this Wooten-O'Shields connection. I am the administrator of the Wooten project, which, although is young compared to many others, having started in 2006, is now at 24 members. I will add that the father of Wiley, is for now and maybe forever, Unknown Wooten, but there are currently two others in the Wooten project who match him and with a little luck, several more to follow, so we have the opportunity to reconnect this branch of Wiley and his unknown Wooten father to their Wooten tree. Please contact me at kdw616@yahoo.com if you would like more.
