I was ihnterested to note the confusion regarding the names GH Clifton, George Henry Clifton, Henry Clifton and so on. One thing that has jumped out at me has been the common habit of calling people by their middle names. My ancestor Thomas Jefferson Sims is referred to my family members as Jefferson. My grandfather William Wilson Langley couldn't be located in census records until I looked for Wilson. I suggest that GH and George and Henry may be one and the same! Wonder if this habit stems from the traditional English/Scottish naming patterns of naming a child for a grandparent, parent etc. In order to distinguish the newest member from the still living? It does make it a little challenging to figure out who is who!
