“DEATH IN PHENIX CITY.—Mrs. Mary A. NEWSOM, wife of Mr. James NEWSOM, died at her house, in Phenix city [Lee County, Alabama], yesterday, after a protracted illness. Her remains will be taken to Clapps’ Factory, near Columbus, for interment today. The funeral will take place at 12 m. at the Primitive Baptist church, in Phenix City, Elder PORTER officiating.” [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Thursday, 05 OCT 1893.] James NEWSOM (ca. 1834 Harris Co, GA – NOV 1897?) is the son of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM of Warren, Marion, and Harris Cos, GA. After James Sr.’s death ca. 1841, Elizabeth moved the family to Clapp’s Factory in Muscogee County. James Jr. m. 24 APR 1858 in Muscogee Co, GA, to Martha THOMPSON (she appears as Mary in 1860 and perhaps Martha M. in 1880, if they are the family on p. 210A at Huguleys Mill in Chambers Co, AL - is this the correct family?). Martha Mary THOMPSON (b. ca. 1837 GA) is perhaps the daughter of James THOMPSON (b. 16 JAN 1815) by the second of three wives. He married 19 JUL 1839 in Harris Co, GA, to his first wife Susan A. HERRING (1819 –1843). Children of James & Martha / Mary (THOMPSON) NEWSOME: William J. (b. ca. 1860 Muscogee Co, GA); and possibly Mary E. (ca. 1865 AL), Clara L. (ca. 1867 AL), Alice Delony (ca. 1869 AL), Henrietta (ca. 1871 AL), and Marietta J. (ca. 1873 AL). It is said one of her daughters married Edgar NIX. For some period of years, James NEWSOME operated a grocery store in Phenix City. James is said by descendants to be buried at Clapp’s Factory as well. James is the brother of my gg-grandfather, Henry M. NEWSOM (1836-1899). The same individuals and families appear in local records with both spellings (NEWSOM and NEWSOME). I am interested in contacting descendants and researchers on this line – thanks. John in TX Notify Administrator about this message?
