So, I take it that it was Hartwell, Jr. who received the 1850s land grants?

My earliest identified Vaughns are in Escambia Co. FL. My grandfather, John B. Vaughn, named his second son Freddie Hartwell, and I've always been fascinated by where that name came from. John B.'s father, John J. Vaughn, was born in VA around 1816, and was in Escambia before 1843. This would seem to make him a slightly older contemporary of your Hartwell, Jr. in Cherokee County.

I'm not sure any of this leads anywhere, but it's the hottest lead I've seen in several decades of butting my head against the brick wall of finding ties among several Vaughn lines.

So you have any further wisdom to share? Thanks. J
