It's difficult to tell which Hartwell entered the land - the records we have don't indicate Jr. or Sr.
Even though I did not find Sr. in the 1860 or 1870 census, the following appears on p. 87 of Cherokee County History 1836-1956 Vol. 1 by Margaret Stewart:
"Hartwell Vaughn died October 17, 1878 at Round Mountain. He was 90 years of age, having been born in Greenville County, Virginia, March 24, 1788. He moved to Union District, South Carolina, 1798. In 1811 (Oct. 3) he married Nancy Walls. They moved to Cherokee County in 1835. They had seven children and at the time of his death he had 182 living discendants. He was a Baptist from 1818 to his death."
Mrs. Stewart didn't indicate where she obtained this information.
