Lisa, Boy, you got that right! I have even seen it spelled "Gillian." You will also see "Gilland." Your ancestors came from Carroll County, GA to Cullman Co., AL. Jackson Gilliland and his wife, Adaline, are in the 1880 Carroll County census (6th Dist., 649 GMD, household #26) living next door to Adaline's parents, William and Martha Wilson Wren. They had one son, Jackson, age 1. Many families from Carroll County migrated to Cullman in the 1890s. There are hoards of Gilliland/Gilland families buried at Powell's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery near Villa Rica, GA. and they are probably your relatives. William Wren is buried in Cullman. His wife, Martha, is buried at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery near Temple, GA (Carroll Co.). William died in 1895 and Martha moved back to Georgia and lived with her daughter, Temperance Wren Thompson. She died in 1923. From another researcher (very reliable) I have the following children of Andrew Jackson Gilliland and Adaline Wren: (1) General Jackson Gilleland, b. 20 Feb, 1878 in GA (prob Carroll Co.,), d. Aug 1929 in Cullman. (2) William Osbern Gilleland, b. 6 March 1881, d. 19 Nov 1960 in Cullman. Buried Missionary Grove Cemetery, Cullman. Married Ida Sparks 14 Sept 1913 in Cullman. She was born 19 March 1896 and died 6 Jan 1959 in Cullman. Also buried at Missionary Grove. (3) L.L. Gilleland, b. abt 1884. (This is your ancestor) Married Dovie White 26 Nov 1903 in Cullman. (4) Lula Gilleland, b. abt 1888 in GA, d. bef 1971. (5) Ben Lee Gilleland, b. 6 Feb 1889 in GA, d. 18 Oct 1971 in Cullman. Buried Missionary Grove. (6) Roxie Gilleland, b. March 1893 in GA, d. bef 1971. (7) Delia A. Gilleland, b. June 1895 in AL, d. bef 1971. (8) Julia A, Gilleland, b. Aug 1896, d. aft 1971 (9) Kate Gilleland, b. 5 Aug 1897 in Cullman, d. 15 June 1973 in Cullman. Buried at Missionary Grove. Given the first names in this family, look for a possible connection to the family of Marcus Granville Gilland and Julia Angeline McWhorter who were married in 1874 in Carroll County. There is also an Osburn "Gillian", age 60, and his wife, Lettey, age 55, living next door to Marcus "Gillian" (age 27) and Julia (McWhorter) in 1880 Carroll County. All are said to be born in GA. Adaline's sister, Eliza J. Wren, married William Leroy McWhorter (brother to Julia Angeline McWhorter "Gilland") in 1877 in Carroll County. There are obviously relationships in these families. (Eliza and William McWhorter are my ancestors). Marcus and Julia "Gilland" (that is the way it is spelled on their gravestone) are buried at Powell's Chapel in Carroll Co. William Leroy McWhorter is buried at Emeus Baptist Church cemetery in Cullman. I have no idea where Eliza is buried. She died about 1894 (we think) and William moved to Cullman and remarried a Mrs. Selie Bentley. Would love to discuss this family with you further in private e-mail. We are abviously cousins. Also, look for messages from Chris Wren on these message boards. He has done extensive research on the Wren family. We also have quite a bit on the Wilsons thanks to a recently discovered book on the Edward Wilson family. We are at a dead end on William Wren. Hope this helps. I look forward to hearing from you.
