Estell T. Mayfield Smith, 87, died April 20, 2009, at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Red Bay, Ala., to John Oscar and Maxie Nave McDonald Thorne. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was previously a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church in Minden, La.
Services were at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Red Bay.
Survivors included one son, Jimmy Mayfield (Lavell) of Red Bay; one granddaughter, Cris Mayfield Nichols (Trevor) of Red Bay; one great-grandchild, Adam Mills; one brother, J.E. Thorne (Eupal) of Red Bay; two stepgrandchildren, Janice McNatt and Mark Armstrong (Cindy); six stepgreat-grandsons, Cort Armstrong, Jason Oliver, Kirk Armstrong, Erik Armstrong, Clay McNatt and Levi McNatt; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Emeric “Doc” Mayfield and Darroll Smith; three brothers, Leslie Thorne, Junior Thorne and Elmer Lee Thorne; and a stepgrandson, Bob Armstrong.
