joseph r.ward and his family are buried in the lawrenceville cemetery,north of abbeville i was just there a couple of weeks ago.i have a question? he was a deacon in
the church,why were he and his family buried so far back in the cemetery under the trees,i don,t understand why?,i took pictures and the blind on the one side of the church was up facing the cemetery.did joseph and mathilda live on the old jesse ward place at the bottom of the hill? there,s quite alot of property back there.i did some research on jesse ward and he was african american,possibly a slave? just wondering.joseph ward&mathilda wilcoxen ward were my ggggrandparents on the ward side.i think joseph r.ward was a brother to christopher ward born 1800 in south carolina that was married to lucretia treacy vickers.question where is christopher ward born 1800 buried i could not find him.
i found christopher ward&nancy j.gamble,they are buried in the abbeville baptist church cemetery aka city cemetery.
oh daniel ward is buried next to joseph&mathilda wilcoxen
ward.their family is buried there under the trees in the lawrenceville cemetery.by the way someone needs to go in there and remove some of the trees that are hanging on the headstones.i was able to remove a few limbs.the stones are badly potmarked from the limbs and mildew.the one side of joseph,s grave is open,i wasn,t very happy about that.
in the city cemetery in abbeville alot of the tall spire stones are down and need to be put back up on their bases,one of which may be lucretia vickers,the inscription was facing the ground and i could not read it.it is very near to where christopher ward and nancy j.gamble are buried over in the northeast corner near the church.
