Brenda,
There is a book that was put together in 1968 regarding the Merritts of Sampson County. It was researched using the NC archives, etc. There is not a Levi listed as a son of Captain Robert Merritt (he was my GGGGGreat Grandfather).I don't know if you can get a copy of the book anymore, and obviously it needs to be updated and there are mistakes.
I did find a Levi Merritt who was born 1831 (per Confederate Pension records, Archives NC) he married a Fannie Joyner and they had 12 children. He was the son of Drewry (also spelled Drury) Merritt (per census records).Levi had a son Archie Perry Merritt who then had a son he named Levi. There is mention that a Levi Merritt born in 1827 lived with Haywood Merritt, they could be his sons.McLean Merritt (b. 1800) also had a son named Levi (b. 1839).
That is all the references to a Levi Merritt in the book. You can certainly reply and I will do my best to look up your questions as I can.
Kim Hayden (grand-daughter of George Wells Merritt)
