Alba Family Genealogy Forum
My paternal grandmother, Justa Alba y Caballero, was born in Rute, Spain. She came to Cuba in the mid 1880's with her parents. Her father was a Captain in the Spanish cavarly, who died fighting during the Cuban War for Independence. She resided in Camajuani, Cuba. My grandfather was Manuel Valdes Cuelli, originally from Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.
My grandmother was a teacher, who I understand, was and is still is widely respected by her former pupils. She left her house and landholdings in the late 1960 and moved to my parents house in Habana. This was due to the abuse she was enduring from the government who wanted to take over the land.
As to the lineage, they are in fact related to the Duque de Alba. There is still a Duque in Spain. As it was told to me by my grandmother, in the days of medieval Spain, families were usually split-up. Those related to the actual holder of the title would move to Madrid in order to participate in the court activities (and therefore receive rewards, land grants, etc). The other side of the family would remain living in the landholdings. This was done for a dual purpose: (1) to administer the holdings and (2) to provide monies to the Duke to maintain the courtly life styles.
I did meet some Alba decendants (from her sister, I believe). One lived in NY, where she was a union leader for hotel workers - I think her name was Kathy. I also understand that there are some other decendants in California.
