The Lamoni Chronicle
Lamoni, Iowa
July 13, 1905

Ed ALBAUGH was quite severely injured about ten o'clock on the 4th of July, by the explosion of a cannon fire cracker. He had arranged half a dozen crackers in a row and was trying to ignite them all at once when one exploded
prematurely within eighteen inches of his face. His eyes and face were filled with cinders and mud by the force of the explosion. His hat was blown off his head and he stood in a stooping posture with his hands covering his face for a few minutes when he was assisted to Dr. Greenman's office. The doctor extracted half a dozen cinders out of the cornea of the right eyeball and three out of the left and tired himself out picking mud and cinders which had penetrated the flesh. He was able to go home about one o'clock p.m. and yesterday morning was doing as well as could be expected. It was a narrow escape from total blindness. - Decatur County Journal
