Ole Jorgenson Alby was born at Opdahl, Norway, Feburary 17, 1855.He emigrated from Norway to Iowa in 1881.Marit Sjolsvold was born in Rindal, Norway.He married Marit in Duluth, Minnesota on December 7,1883.They moved from Duluth in 1886 to homestead in New Solum Township in Marshall County Minnesota. They built a log house and Marit and their son, Joseph, stayed there while Ole went back to Duluth to work at the coal docks.
As other relatives and friends arrived in New Solum Township, they stayed at the Alby home while they built their log houses.After Ole came back he did farm work for a cattle buyer to help feed and clothe his family.
Oxen were used to go to St. Hilaire or Warren for supplies when it was more than they could carry on their backs.
In about 1906 Ole started work on the Soo Line Railroad section crew and several of his sons became Soo Line employees also.Ole worked at Anita on the section crew until he retired.
Hjalmer, Peter, Albert, Martina, Julius, Lewis, Martin, Olga, and Tina were born in Marshall County, Minnesota.They received their first schooling in a one room log schoolhouse.
There were up to 30 children, who would walk long distances to go to school and during recess time they chased rabbits or played "Pump Pump Pull Away" and "Last couple Out."
Ole Alby died on September 1, 1938 at the age of 83, and Marit Alby died on January 26, 1955 at the age of 89.
