I have the long shot of long shots to ask William Alexander people about:
Do any Alexander researchers here have any connection to a William Alexander, possibly a Rev War soldier, and later a
member of the first Illinois legislature?
A William Alexander came to Illinois before statehood. He founded the town of America, and served in the first legislature. The county of Alexander in deep Southern Illinois was named for him. The town of America was
washed away by a flood being near the confluence of both the Mississippi and the Ohio.
There is lore suggesting that what became Illinois attracted the men who served George Rogers Clark - and who were assigned to Ft. Kaskaskia... and there are Alexanders mentioned in the military and militia rosters.
Perrin's History of Alexander county only says that William Alexander was so disappointed with the loss of America that he 'went south and died'. My interpretation of this statement is that he returned to his home, where he most likely had family. South from deep southern Illinois is Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, etc.
My great grandmother is a descendant of this William Alexander, per family lore. I have been unable to trace backward with any satisfaction. Quite recently I have learned that she may have been the daughter of a Robert and Elizabeth Essig Alexander.
