William M. Alexander - anyone looking for him?

William M. Alexander appeared in Illinois before statehood, a Dr. that roamed the territory at will, but also a man of vision, founding the town of America, in 1816. America became the county seat of Alexander County, Il, named for the Dr.

When America failed due to lack of deep water docking for ships, and floods, William Alexander removed to Kaskaskia, seat of State government, where he served in the Illinois Legislature... but when the Illinois capital was removed from Kaskaskia to Vandalia circa 1820, Perrin, in his History of Alexander, Union and Pulaski Counties said that William M. Alexander '....went south and died..."

William M. Alexander's picture appears in the 1980 History of Alexander County. Most likely for his campaign or service in the Illinois Legislature....he appeared to still be a young man at that time.

Family lore states that my great grandmother was a daughter or a granddaughter of this William M. Alexander. I cannot prove or disprove this until I can find his origins and identify his family.

If you're missing a William M. Alexander from someplace south of Illinois, please contact me.

Thanks!
