Hello,
I'm researching the Alexander surname. My maternal line came from Co. Antrim but they must have been somewhere else before arriving there. They may have been from Scotland or they may have been from elsewhere in Ireland. I know that the family included a coal importer, farmers (maybe ag. labs), members of the legal profession and seafarers. I remember my mother told me one of her relatives vanished to goodness knows where to enter the acting profession.
The Irish Mariners website contains an index of Irish born merchant seamen contained in the CR10 series of index cards in the Southampton Civic Archives. The CR10 Archive holds 270,000 cards covering the multinational workforce of the British Merchant Marine during the period from late 1918 to the end of 1921. All ranks and jobs at sea are covered from master to scullion. A unique feature of the CR 10 cards is that they usually contain a good photograph of the seaman. There are fourteen Alexanders on the index. I've managed to find ten by using a hit and miss system. If anyone has an Alexander ancestor who was in the British Merchant Navy and knows their identity number the search would be easier.
