From what information I have found so far, Landon Cole (Alfred)Adkins married Eliza Elizabeth Tompkins (1860-1940) in 1878 in Wise Co., VA. Eliza is the d/o William Tandy Tompkins and Lucinda Perkins. Landon and Eliza had 5 children:

1. Mary Myrtle "Molly" Adkins (1879-1946)
2. Sarah Ellen Adkins (1887-1980)
3. Ida Blanche Adkins (1891-1985)
4. William James "Bill" Adkins (1894-1968)
5. Jemima Helen Adkins (1896-1968)

Ida Blanche Adkins is my husbands great grandmother. Ida married John Henry White. Ida and John moved to Loudonville, Ashland Co., Ohio sometime after 1950. She died there on Dec.6, 1985 and is buried at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum in Richlands, Tazewell Co., VA. Ida and John had 8 children, most still in Ohio.

I do have a few pictures of Ida with her sisters Jemima and Sarah taken sometime after 1950, as they are all "older". I have no information on their brother William but hope to journey down that trail soon.

I am just as baffled by this whole branch of tree as everyone else it seems. I, too, have come across the same census information and am trying to piece everything together. It seems the only connection between the Alfreds and Adkins is the relationship between Barnet Bowman (Matilda's stepfather) and Sarah Bowman Adkins (with whom Matilda stayed according to the 1860 Wise Co., VA census). For awhile, I was convinced that Landon's mother Matilda was a Rutherford and was the 2nd wife of Elijah Adkins. I am now leaning more towards Landon and his brother Sidney taking the Adkins name...for whatever reason, but most likely from staying with Sarah most of their lives. Henry Adkins died before they became teenagers.

I have seen Matilda, Landon and Sidney listed as "mulatto" and as "white". I assume it depends on the census taker's perception. It's also a possibility of Melungeon roots. That's a whole other avenue that I will someday have to
undertake as well as finding out what happened to Matilda? Did she eventually marry? Did she have a falling out of some sort with her sons since they took another's last name? Only Landon listed his mother as "Tilda Alfred" on his marriage license. Sidney didn't list her at all.

I am in the process of collecting all of the tree information I can for my husbands aunt. She is now 74 and would like to know where she came from. Her father (and my husbands grandfather) is Charles Landon White (s/o Ida Blanche Adkins White). He died when auntie was 8 and my mother-in-law was 6. They knew very little about their father's side of the family. Charles was a coal miner from WV and died of TB at the age of 46. Auntie and my m-i-l Sonia were raised in and around Henlawson and Peach Creek, WV. All 3 of Charles' children moved to Florida.

Ida Blanche Adkins Baptism:

Baptism: name: Ida Bland Adkins gender: Female baptism/christening date: baptism/christening place: birth date: 03 Apr 1891 birthplace: Wise County, Virginia death date: name note: race: White father (or slave owner): Landon C. Adkins father.

I have found several other records on that I didn't see listed anywhere else.
