Richard Alfred is my great-grandfather. His daughter Grace Ella Alfred is my paternal grandmother. She married Joseph Henry Esquirol. The date is something of a mystery at the moment. Family information had it as Sep 9 1891 in Brooklyn but no record was found in the NYC Municipal Archives. Another possible date of Sep 9 1887 (based on a ring engraving) also turned up no record.
Joseph and Grace Esquirol had three children all born in Brooklyn - Grace F. b. 1893 d. 1897, Joseph Alfred b. 1898 d. 1981 and John Henry, my father, b. 1900 d. 1970. Grace Ella Alfred Esquirol d. Jun 11 1926 in Brooklyn.
The earliest record I have for Richard Alfred is the 1870 U.S. Census where he and his family are listed in the 21st Ward of Brooklyn. Richard is 33, a printer by trade, owner of real estate worth $3000, born in Canada and denoted as a U.S. citizen, which would indicate he had been naturalized. The census entry also lists his wife Elizabeth and their three oldest children, Albert, Grace, and Frederick.
I have not found Richard Alfred and family in the 1880 census in New York. Richard Alfred is listed in the 1881 Brooklyn City Directory - a printer living on Vernon Ave. near Stuyvesant Ave.
I am intrigued to learn that Richard Alfred died 1896 in Umatillo, FL. Do you have a death certificate for him?
Elizabeth Alfred, Richard's widow, was living with her son Frederick in 1910. The census for that year reports 5 of her 9 children then living and gives 1846 as the year of her immigration to the U.S. She died in 1917 at her son Frederick's home. What is the source of your information that she was born in Belfast, Ireland or 'in the boat near Ireland'?
Frederick Alfred is the only one of Grace Ella Alfred's siblings about whom I have any information. He lived in Brooklyn, was in the printing business in NYC, married Isabel Julia Cook and was still living in 1927. Frederick and Isabel had two children - Mildred b. 1899 d. 1979 unmarried and Donald b. 1904 d. 1981 married, no children.
The 1870 census also lists a Charles Alfred (32 and born in Canada) and family in Brooklyn. Could he have been a brother of Richard?
Richard Alfred is somewhat of an enigma to me and I would most appreciate what future information you may have, particularly as to his birth and antecedents in Canada.
Finally, do you have a marriage record for Richard Alfred and Elizabeth Phoenix?
