There is a definite error in the genealogical records concerning Etienne Allaire (the son and/or grandson of Charles Allaire (1637 - 1687)).
Marie-Marguerite (Amiel-Lusignan) Allaire (1710 - ????) was either the second wife to Etienne Allaire (1683 – 1753), or the wife of Etienne’s son also called Etienne Allaire (1711 - ????). About half the genealogies I have found show one, the other half show the other. I have been unable to find any records that even mention the discrepancy. No record exclusively shows which of the two situations is the correct one. One can’t even conclude through logic by looking at birth and death dates of everyone involved to determine which is correct.
Etienne Allaire (1683 – 1753) however would have been 53 years old if he married Marie-Marguerite, and 61 years old when their last child was born. Given his age, I don’t think he took Marie-Marguerite as his second wife, but it is still possible.
Etienne Allaire (1711 - ????) would have been 25 years old if he married Marie-Marguerite, and 33 when their last child was born (this situation is more likely).
To complicate matters further, one of these two Etienne Allaire individuals married Josette Amiel-Lusignan on 1 Dec 1736. Which Etienne was married to her? They had no children according to one source. Although, you will notice children were born to Etienne after that marriage date.
Then I found a reference saying one of those two Etienne Allaire individuals married Marguerite Fortin Aug 13 1753 at St-Ours. At least this date was after all children were born.
Finally there is a third Etienne Allaire (1705-1706), born to Etienne Allaire (1683 – 1753) and Marie-Anne (Bilaudeau) Allaire (1685 - 1751) I have yet to mention. He died shortly after birth, so I didn’t think he would enter the picture. However I found an alternate death date for him of May 21 1731 at St-Ours. Perhaps he did live to adulthood, and this may further explain the controversy.
There is also some discrepancy with the children. I have found some genealogies that have omitted some of them. My list of children has been pieced together from multiple sources. If the great Etienne Allaire Debate is ever solved, perhaps this will be understood at that time. If any Etienne Allaire did indeed have more then one wife, it would be nice to figure out which child came from which wife.
Perhaps there were other people named Etienne Allaire unrelated to this lineage living in the same place at the same time, that may also explain some of the controversy.
I suspect that different people tracing the genealogy found original documents naming Etienne Allaire, but didn’t realize that there was more then one, and therefore reached different genealogical conclusions without realizing. All genealogies are therefore suspect, regardless to how definitive you believe it to be.
Does anyone have original documents or know where to find them? Has anyone ever found mention of this problem, and perhaps any mention to a solution?
Here is a rough copy of my records on the two Etienne Allaire individuals. Unfortunately I have pieced information together from too many sources and did not keep track. Also note that my records reflect the believe that Marie-Marguerite was married to the son, not to the father.
