The cruel decree of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492 requiring Jews in Spain to convert to Catholocism, emigrate or be executed, produced cyrpto-Jews who took the Roman Catholic oath of allegiance and continued to observe the Jewish faith, as well as those who moved to France and married into that population and about that time DeAllaire and variations appeared, it is said. Descendants of those Jews might carry defective chromosomes that involved some sixteen diseases for which tests are available to avoid serious problems.
"Abrahams Children" by Jon Entine is an excellent book on efforts to use y-dna tests to identify descendants of Sephardic Jews, Ashkenasi, Levites and Cohanin Jews. has a special program to identify such descendants through tests. I recommend the book and the tests.
