I found 1624/1625 Muster records and other contemporaneous documents showing that Elias Legarde (also Laguarde, LaGuard, Legardo and other variations) was living in the household of Anthonie Bonall in what was then Elizabeth Cittie, now Hampton, Virginia. He was described as age 38, a 'frenchman' and a 'free man'. Land records show that he leased acreage from Mr. Bonall in the vicinity of Harris Creek (now in Hampton), presumably for the purpose of establishing a vineyard.
