Was just going back into GenForum and reading some old posts. Noted some questions and statements you and I had made and wondered if you had followed up on them.
It was about Elias LeGarde arrival in Virginia as a vintner and possibly being originally from Portugal.
Elias is listed in at least two books as a passenger on the Abigail arriving in Virginia in 1623.
1: "New World Immigrants", Vol 1 edited by Michael Tippen.
2: "Ships Passenger Lists - The South 1538-1825".
He is shown as being the first Jew in the English permanent colonies in America in, "300 Years of American Jewish History 1621-1921" by David Berger.
I posted in GenForum a request for information on him on him in the "Jewish Genealogy" site. I received a reply. You may go into the site and read it. But the content basically says the name "LeGarde" is a well know Jewish name of a family that escaped from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition to Portugal. Now we have another lead to follow up on. Have not done so myself, but plan to pursue this lead.
I am retired and make my home on a farm in Missouri. Lot of work to do during the Summer months so don't do much research except during the winter months.
Keep in touch. Together we can get much closer to the answers to all these questions we have on Elias.
Please let me know privately your branch. I too have Bardon's Book, but have been doing research on the Beaufort County Alligoods for over 40 years. Bardon and I have some of the same sources; public records, books and cousins.
