If Elias was a Spanish/Portuguese (Sephardic) Jew from France, then this point is moot. An "o" ending would be entirely possible. An "o" could also be an anglicanization of the -eau sound in French.
On another note, I may point out that Holland and England had the largest Portuguese Jewish community in the world, and that it was especially vibrant in the 17th and 18th centuries.
