Woman Who Came to Texas in Covered Wagon in '55 Dies
Dallas Morning NewsFebruary 23, 1929
A pioneer Texas woman who made two trips from Missouri to Texas in a covered wagon seventy-four years ago, died Friday morning in Dallas.
She was Mrs. Lydia Hassell, 86. She died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs Cora Burton, 1408 Young Street, after an illness of a week.
Mrs. Hassell came to Texas from Missouri twice before settling at Weatherford in 1855. At that time territory in the vicinty of Weatherford was settled by Comanche Indians. Dallas, through which she passed on each trip, had one store and one post office. She had lived in Dalals fifty-six years at the time of her death.
Surviving Mrs. Hassell is a daughter, Mrs. L. Tibbs, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Burton residence, after which the body will be sent to Irving for burial.
In the next day's DMN I foound that Ed C. Smith & Bros Mortuary handled the body and that the burial is in Kitts or Kit Cemetery in Irving.
Mrs. Cora Burton is Cora Dagnal whose mother is Susan C. Haywood, Lydia Allman's 2nd daughter. I have not found what happened to Susan but believe she died about 1893 or 1894. She was married to Jefferson D. Dagnal. He died February 25, 1915 in Dallas.
Lydia's eldest daughter is Elizabeth Pierce who married a Mr. Tibbs. They had four children, only one which I can identify, Maud. Maud Pierce married a Joe E. Miller. A Joe Elbert Miller registered for the WWI draft in Dallas andwas born Dec 8, 1881. I have not proven he is Maud's husband.
I would like to share other information on this Allman family. Lydia is the sister of my 2nd great grandfather, John C. Allmon.
