John W. Shackelford was a son of Sterling and a grandson of John and Anne White-Shackelford.

John W. Shackelford was a son of Sterling and Nancy McQuaid-Shackelford and was born on January 09, 1821. I have found from various sources that as with his father Sterling, there are conflicts on the birth place of John W. Some report his birth place as Shelby County, Kentucky while others place his birth in Putnam County, Indiana. As mentioned under the biography of Sterling we find from The Shackelford Clan Magazine that Sterling was still living in Shelby County as late as 1820 but had moved to Putnam County prior to 1830. Putnam County did not become a county until 1822 and looking at the birth date of John we see he was born in 1821. The fact that they moved from Shelby County, Kentucky to Putnam County, Indiana would have to occurred on or after 1822. Knowing this, John W was not born in Putnam and was most likely born in Shelby County.

Another possible clue in the effort to try and determine when this Shackelford family came from Kentucky to Indiana can be found in the formation to one of the border counties. This would be Montgomery County. John and Louisa appear in Montgomery County prior to the birth of their children who were born in Montgomery County and not Putnam. Montgomery County, Indiana is located in the Western portion of Indiana and is bordered to the south by Putnam County. Montgomery County was formed from Putnam in 1823. Maybe John and his family never left Putnam and they were living in the section that became Montgomery, which would explain their living in both counties. This would then place their arrival from Kentucky sometime between 1822 and 1823.

John W. Shackelford would marry two times. Both of these marriages were to sisters, Lucy J. and Louisa Allnutt, daughters of Ninian and Mary Baker-Allnutt. John W married Lucy J Allnutt in Boone County, Indiana on July 30, 1855. Lucy was born in the year 1834 in Owen County, Kentucky and died at the age of twenty-one on April 18, 1857, just short of two years after her marriage to John. On December 03, 1858 John W. Shackelford married Louisa Allnutt in Putnam County, Indiana. Louisa was born on September 27, 1840 in Owen County, Indiana and died in Lodoga, Montgomery County, Indiana on February 12, 1902. It is believed that John W. and Louisa are buried in Lodoga. Lucy J Shackelford is buried at the New Maysville Cemetery in Putnam County, Indiana.
