A "cute" story I heard is that when the first Alphins came to Virginia (of the Shelton-Alphin family) there were "two brothers," evidently from England. They were orphaned aboard ship and no one knew their names, so they were called "the Orphan boys." In the local way of speaking, sure, Alphin can sound like "orphan." But I don't believe the story for some reason!
