Thank you for your reply. You've confirmed some of the assumptions I've made and given me new leads.

My mother recognized all of Bessie Mack's siblings except Leslie. She says there were two more brothers, Sherman and Pete.

The LDS site has one listing for William Alphin b abt 1794 in Duplin Co., married to a Nancy WESSON, but only traces the line of Daniel Joseph Alphin.

I also found a William Alphin from Duplin who enlisted in the CSA at the age of 60. He enlisted on March 3, 1862 in the 51st Inf Reg of NC. He died Nov 3, 1862 in Duplin Co. Do you know if this is the same William?
