The Nacogdoches County Alvises are descended from John S Alvis of Ralls Co MO and his wife Serena Figgins.
This is what my database says about them:
John Spencer Alvis, b ca 1814, TN, s/o Shadrach & Nancy Hail; m ca 1836, Serena A Figgins, IL; 1850 Ralls Co MO, 36 TN; 1860: Pike Co, 48 TN; d 1867, age 55 (History of M, R, P Cos MO); 1870 widow w/6 ch, 1 gr-dt. Ch: George W, Sarah J, Henry, Aaron Spencer, Zachariah, Permelia, John W [William?], Shadrach, James Franklin. Those living in 1931 were Zachariah of TX, William of OK, Shadrach of OR and Frank of OK.
The sons who went to Texas were Zachariah, b Mar 1848, MO (see parents' 1850, 1860, 1870 censuses); 1900, San Augustine Co TX, alone, not known to have married or had children; and George Washington Alvis, b Nov 1837, IL (1850, 1860); m ca 1870, Mary Ada Kirkley, San Augustine Co TX; 1850 Ralls Co MO; 1860: ae 28=b 1832 IL; 1880, San Aug Co TX, w/wife, dt & 3 sons; 1900, w/wife, 6 ch; 1910 San Aug Co TX, w/wife, son. Ch: James Washington, George Richard, Lena [Lemmie], Willie F/M, Charles Tucker, Zachariah Ross, Edward Augustus.
I imagine your father William Alvis, who married Patsy Shelton, is descended from one of these sons. Give me the year of his birth and I'll see what else I can find.
The Alvises came to Virginia from England, probably in the 1660s or 1670s.
My fourth great-grandfather was a brother of John Spencer Alvis. You are eligible for the DAR through John's mother, Nancy (Hail) Alvis. Kathy
