Gwathmey does not give any of the spellings you give.

Either your source is unreliable or someone changed the spelling in the course of transcribing the entry.

Gwathmey gives 3 entries for one or more persons said to have been on the rolls of the 1st VA Regiment (Continental):

John Buyes, Bayas, Byas

These rolls can be hard to read, on one hand, and on the other various persons writing the rolls may give variable spellings for a single person.

If you go here you can find what microfilm rolls contain rosters for the 1st VA (Continental):

You can borrow the microfilm from the National Archives by inter-library loan.

If you go here you can find more information on the regiment, possibly including what area it was recruited from:

If you want more information on the actual person, surname message boards may be helpful. Military records very rarely have personal information about the soldiers.

Good hunting,
Jade
