Christopher, You have two key research problems: --distinguishing between same-named persons --determining where your target person lived during the time of the Revolutionary War. First, no person by this name is listed in _South Carolinians in the Revolution_, nor in the Continental Line Regiments service records index. This does not mean he did not have militia service. For better certainty you must do your research in local records. Second the majority of persons by this surname that I have run across spread from the Hudson Valley in the 18th century, particularly into the Minisink region, lower Delaware River Valley, residing in old Northampton Co., PA, NW New Jersey and southern NY. These people may have served in Rebel militia and certainly some may have been Loyalists or avoided military service altogether. I checked the Penna. Museum and Historical Commission's card file of data extracted from the published *Pennsylvania Archives* where there are scattered militia lists (and from some scattered other records) including for Northampton Co., PA. No Jacob Westbrook was there, although there were others by this surname. This does not mean that a Jacob was not in the militia, only that some surviving muster rolls and payrolls did not list one by this name. Even if you do find a militia muster roll listing, realize that able-bodied white males were considered to be members of the militia and to turn out for regular musters. Such a listing does not suggest active-duty service. New Jersey records are more difficult to get access to, the main source being a huge ledger and scattered documents in the NJ Archives in Trenton, some of which have been abstracted and published. For New York militia, State Troops and Continental Regiment listings that were published before a ca. 1911 fire destroyed most Rev. War related documents in the NY State Library, do a web search for the "three rivers" web site where there is a good search engine and scanned lists from the books. Be sure to check name-spelling variants. Good hunting, Jade Notify Administrator about this message?
