Julie, Untangling family lore can be a great challenge, but first one must accept that stories can diverge from historical accuracy over time. Details may be lost, someone may not recall something and add some item or scenario that made sense to them. If you have looked at who was at Breed's Hill (often called Bunker Hill) you'll see that the Patriots were all from New England. Migration after the war from New England to York Co., PA would have been quite uncommon. The westward movements were for land, not to relatively thickly populated areas such as SE PA. Possibly your man's father or grandfather was indeed captured during the war, but if you can document your man's birthplace as York Co., PA, then capture was unlikely to have been at Breed's Hill. Your best bet would be backtracking your ancestor's life path. Where was he married; was that where his parents lived? Have you been to that place to search for estate records for his father? Did he live some place before his marriage that would be where his parents lived? Can you find a sign of people by this name in York Co., PA around 1790? If so, have you looked for local church records that might give his birth? This step by step approach cannot be done through Revolutionary War records. Many, many men were captured, however briefly, whose names are not recorded in what is available today. Many Rev. War related records were destroyed when Washington was burned during the War of 1812. Sorry not to be of direct assistance, but possibly this will help you set priorities about what to be looking for. Good hunting, Jade Notify Administrator about this message?
