Land warrants in Illinois Territory

How does one go about identifying where a man's military service was served when the only background information is that found on a land warrant. In these cases all land warrants were issued for land in what is now Illinois. All were issued in 1817 or 1818.

(1) John B. McKinney whose warrant was for his service as a sergeant in the 939th [??] Regiment of Infantry.
(2) William McKinney as a private in Post's Company of the 12th Regiment of Infantry.
(3) James McKenny as a private in Way's Company of the 4th Regiment of Infantry.
(4) John McKenney as a private in the 36th Regiment of Infantry.

I have tried Googling the pertinent words to try to identify where these various companys and regiments were but that was hopeless. Can someone help?

Thank you.
