Barbara,

It appears from fairly handy indexes that persons of this surname did not serve among the Continental Army, or among the State Troops that had Continental service, among surviving rosters.

This does not mean that none served as soldiers. It also does not mean that none were among militiamen. It is likely that some *were* among militiamen, since all free white males aged roughly 16 to 60 (varies by time and place) were required to be available for militia duty, and were supposed to turn up at regular musters for drill. When rosters survive listing men who turned out for such events, they do not necessarily indicate active-duty service.

I am sure you have done web searches for NC information and VA information, but you should realize that a huge quantity of documents are not on the internet. A wealth of data in the Virginia State Library, the NC Archives, and County Courthouses have not been transcribed or indexed by volunteers or by those who intend publication, although no few books have already seen the light of day.

If you are determined to pursue this, those are the places that you must visit in person to determine what is to be found.

The following may help you determine some of the sorts of documents that you can look for. In addition, there is a series published regarding "Public Claims" from Virginia, a booklet for each County, which lists claims for reimbursement for goods and services provided to Revolutionary War military units -- for which the claimants desired reimbursement.

The following may be of help:

Among the sorts of things one might find at a County Courthouse would be in minutes books for the Courts of Common Pleas (or Quarter Sessions). The County Courts were responsible for organizing and paying militia in the event of active duty, fining those who didn't show up when ordered, recommending persons for Commissions as officers, etc. In addition, wives might apply for some money for support of themselves or children while husbands were away, or might apply for support if a husband were killed while on active duty. There could be records concerning measures taken against neighborhood Loyalists, of whom there were many in every area of the country.

I wish you success.

Jade
