The person who was drum/fifer, Capt. Jonathan Brown's Co., Lamb's Artillery (2nd Continental Artillery) Reg't. appears on more than 50 Muster and Pay Rolls and other lists as "Peck" with first name Jesse spelt various ways. He enlisted in April 1777, paid first for beginning April 10. He enlisted from Wallingford, New Haven Co, CT. He appears on the rolls into 1780, but is listed as having deserted 5 Apr 1780. The rolls often state that he had enlisted "for the war" - but did he think he had enlisted for 3 years (as many did)? You would have to read the rolls for this Regiment and decide for yourself whether you think the surname was "Pock" or "Peck," but the military evidently thought it was "Peck". Handwriting can be difficult! Some in this time period used the old form of script 'e' that looks somewhat like a backwards 'e', and a hasty reader unaware of this form of the letter could read it as an 'o'. The drummer-fifer (once paid as a Matross) is listed along with the rest of this Regiment in the rolls on Microfilm Roll #118 in National Archives Micropublication M246, "Revolutionary War Rolls". You can borrow this microfilm through your local library's Inter-Library-Loan service for a few dollars. Images from the microfilm are also on Ancestry.com, which your library may subscribe to, and possibly also on footnote.com. This Regiment started out as Capt. Lamb's Artillery Company. You can read its history and that of the 2nd Continental Artillery here: http://www.myrevolutionarywar.com/units-american/index.htm Click on American Regiments at the left, then on "Artillery Regiments" and check out both Lamb's and the 2nd Continental Artillery.
